How to get
Endorsed

Get Your Oregon Motorcycle Endorsement

To ride legally in Oregon, you must have a valid driver license and a motorcycle endorsement or instruction permit. The penalty for riding without a motorcycle endorsement can be as much as $2,000 plus court costs.

All applicants for a first-time motorcycle endorsement (new riders) in Oregon are required to pass an approved course. Which course you take depends on your age.

IF you are under age 21

Oregon law requires everyone under age 21 to successfully complete an approved Team Oregon basic course before you apply for a motorcycle endorsement.

IF you ARE 21 OR OLDER

Oregon law requires adults age 21 or older to successfully complete an approved Team Oregon basic course or intermediate course before you apply for a motorcycle endorsement.

Regardless of age, you must complete all classroom sessions, on-bike training sessions, and pass the on-bike riding test. Course graduates must apply for a motorcycle endorsement at DMV to complete the licensing process. Most students are also required to take the DMV motorcycle knowledge test. You can study for the DMV test here.

If you are unsure which course to take, see the course comparison chart to help you decide.

three-wheeled vehicles

“Autocycles” (three-wheeled vehicles with a steering wheel and bucket seat) do not require a motorcycle endorsement. All other types of three-wheelers require a motorcycle endorsement.

Training is recommended but not required for 3W operators. You may apply for a restricted 3W-only endorsement at DMV. Applicants must pass the DMV motorcycle knowledge test, but are not required to complete a rider training course or pass a DMV road test.

DMV Licensing Process

Course graduates must apply for a motorcycle endorsement at DMV to complete the licensing process. DMV recommends you fill out a driver’s license application form in advance. Be prepared to show proof of identity and date of birth, take a vision screening test and pay the fee(s) for the endorsement.

Most riders are required to take the DMV motorcycle knowledge test. You can study for the test here. The DMV knowledge test can be taken in person or online. Learn more about online testing.

Refer to the DMV website for more details about the application process, endorsement fees and registering a motorcycle.

OUT-of-state Residents

A rider with a valid driver license and motorcycle endorsement from another state is not required to take a training course before applying for an Oregon motorcycle endorsement.

Some states accept Team Oregon training for the motorcycle endorsement. Contact the licensing agency in your home state to verify which course is accepted before signing up for a Team Oregon course.
