OUTREACH AND SFT EVENTS

Team Oregon staff, instructors and volunteers attend events and appear before groups and organizations to promote the program and share their enthusiasm for motorcycles, motorcycle safety and rider training opportunities.

TYPES oF EVENTS

Public Awareness

Public awareness events usually involve larger crowds of 50-500 people. Typical examples are rallies, safety fairs and dealer open houses – morning, afternoon or all-day shifts. Team Oregon’s role is to add value to the event as a motorcycle safety resource, to put a friendly face on our program and improve motorcycle safety by interacting one-on-one with the riders we serve – outside of the classroom setting.

Speakers Bureau Presentations

Speakers bureau presentations are a bit more formal, and usually take no more than an hour. Instructors who take these assignments should be classroom-certified and comfortable speaking in public. They usually involve smaller crowds of 10-50 people, and are often closed events at which a Team Oregon representative is a guest speaker. Team Oregon’s role is to act as a resource to groups and organizations with an interest in specific motorcycle safety issues – again, outside of the rider training classroom setting.

How Do I Get Involved?

Public awareness events and speakers bureau presentations can be found on the calendar and are listed as SFT courses in the database. Active instructors who have completed their apprenticeship are eligible to work these events.

If you are interested in representing Team Oregon in this capacity, you may contact Pat Hahn at 541-737-9113.

When you take a public awareness or speakers bureau assignment, you are an ambassador for Team Oregon. How the audience perceives you is how the audience will perceive the entire organization. Bring your “A” game, smile and have fun!

Public Awareness Event Details and Preparation

Instructors are often required to transport equipment, such as a folding display, table, EZ-Up and materials to these events, so riding your motorcycle is not always an option.

Shortly before working an event, instructors should review:

And remember our key messages: All the gear every time, ride unimpaired, assume you are invisible, look where you want to go, take an advanced course. Every interaction you have with an individual should include at least one of these points.

You are encouraged to contact Pat Hahn at 541-737-9113 if you have any questions about working an event. He works directly with the event organizers and knows the finer details.

Speakers Bureau Presentation Details and Preparation

Instructors are provided custom presentation materials for these events. This may include a PowerPoint presentation, handouts and other props. Instructors are occasionally required to bring a computer and projector – these items are available for loan from Team Oregon if necessary.

Topics include rider training, cornering, passengers, crash hazards, etc. Instructors are provided paid time to review the material and practice their delivery.

To be able to discuss random Q and A topics fluently, instructors should be familiar with:
